Seriously, I need your advice. Jackson will be 2 this month and I just don't know what to get a child that age. He is growing and changing so fast I cannot forsee what his new interests will be. After browsing these are things that caught my eye but I have no clue. He's into balls now. He has a couple riding toys but should i get one with pedals? Should I focus on reading kind of toys? Imaginative toys? Am I over-thinking this? yeah of course but since we really don't buy him toys much this one has to count! please comment...please.Friday, January 9, 2009
Seeking experienced mothers
Seriously, I need your advice. Jackson will be 2 this month and I just don't know what to get a child that age. He is growing and changing so fast I cannot forsee what his new interests will be. The Christmas that my son was two we got him a wooden train set. We've since expanded it with more pieces including bridges and more trains, but now two years later he still plays with it nearly everyday. We got him some new pieces for Christmas and we might as well have not bought him anything else because he has built and re-built track everyday all day since Christmas. They can be expensive, but it's been well worth the investment (we never got a train table to go with it and he does just fine building on the floor). I think Brio is the most expensive brand, but imaginarium and Melissa and Doug also make sets that are very similar (they all work together). I've even found small wooden sets that are compatible at Walmart.
At the risk of over-commenting, my kids learned all of the letters of the alphabet more through reading books together and singing the abc's than through toys (although they have a collection of alphabet toys that almost never get played with). Our library has a whole section dedicated to ABC books ("alphabet adventure" is a favorite in that genre). We play letter games at the grocery store too--the kids look at signs while we wait in line and try to find letters that they've learned. The very earliest you should try any actual reading training is probably 3 1/2 (but that's still very early) at which point I suggest "Teach your child to read in 100 Easy lessons" by Siegfried Engelmann.
I love books (obviously) so I get Olivia a lot of book and or reading-related material. All of her toys are too old for her. I mean, she's 18-mos and most of her toys are for two- or three-year olds. Just get Jackson something that's older than he is so it will be challenging for him. If he likes balls, I like the basketball hoop.
I like the basketball hoop idea - it is fun and entertaining ... and Connor doesn't have one. :) And I like the idea of a couple of books! Kids don't need much to be very happy!
I am a HUGE fan of Little People toys. John Evan is 2 1/2 and mostly plays with Thomas toys and any race car toys! A lot of little boys just like the little Matchbox cars cause they are so little and can just be carried around in their little pockets.
I don't know what to tell you! Jacob always seemed to enjoy old phones and easter eggs to real toys. But a monster truck is lots of fun. The little ones that you rev up and they drive like crazy and even drive over stuff. I have a love/hate relationship with a lot of Jacob's "educational" toys. Too loud! But the leapfrog fridge phonics really helped him learn his letters...even though I hate it. Also, now's a good time to break out some puzzles.
I also think the basketball hoop is great. The boys love theirs.
